Page, typography, space — Through the Book(s) #6

A personal investigation on typography related to space: from paper to exhibit design. The exhibition opened on January 24th, 2019 at Leporello photobook(s) et al., Rome, as part of the series of events Through the book(s).

The pages of a book are paper islands filled with words. Yet the entire globe can fit in an atlas. Indeed, even the smallest book can tell us a lot about big spaces; but the space a book occupies on a shelf may not be so insignificant either. This selection of publications forms part of our research into the use of typography within a graphic design context; both as two dimensional element on paper and a three dimensional one in an exhibition space. Something of a pindaric flight, the research encompasses everything from the most fundamental book design manuals; through concrete poetry and the typographic experiments of the twentieth century; right up until Bachelardian rêverie and les espaces autres. Le pagine sono isole di carta riempite di parole. Eppure dentro un atlante c’è tutto il globo terrestre. Un libro può raccontarci molto di uno spazio, ma lo spazio che occupa nella nostra libreria può non essere indifferente. Questa selezione di libri è una parte del nostro lavoro di ricerca sulla tipografia che si confronta con il progetto grafico sulla carta e nello spazio espositivo. È un volo pindarico dai più indispensabili manuali per il disegno del progetto editoriale, attraverso le esperienze di esplorazione tipografica del XX secolo, la poesia concreta, fino allo spazio altro e quello delle rêverie.
