The topic of the urban outskirts often matches with the presence of an alienating and exasperated architectural project through which ghettoisation and a social upheaval give a negative vision of the district of and for their inhabitants.
The project Abitare per intends to make peripheries as “luoghi del possibile” by recognizing and enhancing the quality of the original architectural project and initiating a process of “achieving possibilities” with the inhabitants through the accomplishment of actions, times, resources, roles, expectations, desires. Abitare per involves Quartiere INCIS in Decima – Rome, Complesso IACP Isola di Mazzorbo in Venice, Quartiere Carbonara 2 in Bari.
The project would consist of a map of the fragilities and potentialities of the territory by the creation of a map / guide and a website that contain the goals. The first condition to work on this project — as Davide said (Davide Paterna, Director of Open City Roma) — is to take part to meeting, brainstorming and workshops with inhabitants.
As we partecipated (to be honest, some of) the meeting in Decima district in Rome, we understood the importance in experienced that places, that human reality and the sense of community founded in the proud and disoriented inhabitants.
For the graphic identity we wanted to visualize the civic aspect of this project which included a sort of movement from the bottom up, a social votation of the citizens of the suburb’s community.
We started from the letter A of the title. We modified the typography of the letter in a way that the A seems to be an house. From the title Abitare per, per means “for” but it also means “cross” and, in this way, we chose to represent this part of the title as a cross (x) which suggests the idea of a crossroad, a meeting point of the people in a specific place. By rotating the letter A in 180 degrees, we suggested the idea of a pencil to express a vote which represent the possibility of a choice, the opportunity to realize an expectation by the expression of a vote. To emphasize the concept of a civic choice by vote we added a cross under the letter A. We used a lively colour for each district and we juxtaposed them to connect the three identities.
